Three factors influencing colour perception

The colour is determined by the three variables “Triple”.

The light source

The object

The Observer

The light source

The type of light source influences our colour impression. In different lighting, for example sunlight and artificial light, the colour of a sample is noticed  differently. To ensure the comparability of colour readings, the light types are standardized. Worldwide, the color values are calculated using the same functions. The three main types of light are D65, A and F11.

D65 – Daylight – 6500 Kelvin

A – general-use high- lamp – 2856 Kelvin (light bulb)

F11 – Fluorizing light, e.g. neon lights

The Object

The perception is dependent from:

  • The reflection of the object itself
  • The surface texture. Part of the incident light is directly reflected (mirrored)
  • The gloss level

The Observer

The 2 ° and 10 ° field of view

The color perception depends on the viewing angle. Depending on the angle at which the sample is viewed, the colour may appear lighter or more intense.
